This is a study program on advanced level with a wide subject range for students with at least 3 years of previous studies at university level in related subjects. The first year provides a broad introduction to important areas in interaction design, while the second year contains substantial and specialized studies within a field of your choice.
Study Form
The program is based in a studio, where you work on various design projects individually and together with other students.
The entire program is based on studio work with different design projects, sometimes together with other students and sometimes individually. The teaching staff work primarily in the role of tutors. In their capacity of experienced designers they help you develop by giving advice and inspiration, providing examples, posing difficult questions and evaluating your work.
Through working with different types of design projects you will gradually compile a portfolio that will become your most important qualification on graduation. Moreover, the projects enable you to make contacts within the academic world, the business community and cultural institutions that can prove useful in the future.
Applications
The admission procedure is based on the student's work samples, along with a written statement giving reasons for application. Last application date for the Autumn Semester is January 15.
Career Prospects
After a few difficult years, the IT sector is finally entering a new recruiting phase and in the future interaction design will be a necessary qualification.
Due to the recent slump within the entire IT sector, many companies have not been able to recruit new staff for several years. At the same time, our dependency on digital media and services has increased daily. What use to be a technology for supporting professional work is increasingly being deployed in consumer products. Use qualities and experiences are in the process of becoming competitive factors. The need for interaction design will almost certainly increase within the IT and media sectors. In the USA, for example, major IT companies like SAP and Oracle have begun to employ interaction designers and usability specialists during the last year, in order to improve their business.
Another labour market that is rapidly growing is interaction design research. In Sweden, as well as abroad, new institutes and research groups in interaction design are founded, with an aim to create new ideas around digital artefacts and their range of application. After your Master's degree, you will be qualified for further studies at K3, which can result in a doctorate in interaction design. Many new researchers and teachers in interaction design will be required to fill the opportunities offered by the new research institutions.
Research
Interaction design is an important field of research at K3, where we investigate future digital possibilities. The majority of our teachers are active researchers and designers, and several of the course items are created in cooperation with ongoing research projects.
